The two most common refractive procedures performed to correct refractive error are LASIK (laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis) and PRK (photorefractive keratectomy). With both procedures, the eximer laser is used to change the surface shape of the cornea to correct myopia (near-sightedness), hyperopia (far-sightedness), and astigmatism. With LASIK, a flap is made and lifted prior to reshaping the cornea. PRK is performed as a surface treatment with no flap creation.

This map includes both lower-order aberrations as well as higher-order abberations. Lower-order abberations make up approximately 85% of the refractive error of your eye and include the degree of nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. All-Laser LASIK

Lastly, we currently use the latest fifth-generation intralase laser – the IFS – for all LASIK cases for flap creation in all-laser LASIK. This laser creates a bladeless flap in approximately 10 seconds, which is over twice as fast as any other previous generation Intralase lasers in use in Riverside and San Diego Counties. This exponentially increases patient safety and recovery time.

You will have a comprehensive evaluation by the doctor who will actually be performing your surgery. Patients with certain conditions may not be good candidates for LASIK. These include patients with a history of corneal disease such as keratoconus, corneal dystrophy, corneal thinning, corneal scarring, viral infection of the cornea, or severe dry eye. Also, patients with a history of ocular inflammation or autoimmune disease may not be good candidates for refractive surgery.
